The paper focuses on the emergency of private universities in Nigeria and the possible and probable implications for public universities. The paper therefore traced the history of private universities and also examines the need for such institutions drawing a parallel from the world example. Thereafter, the paper identifies and discusses some key areas in the development of private universities in Nigeria with a view to appraising them and drawing out the challenges therein for public universities
